What is the Circle of Light?
Circle of Light-BCRI Women Giving Initiative is the first ever all-women led giving campaign created by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI). The Circle of Light is designed to (1) provide strong funding support to BCRI’s operations; (2) give light to the power, strength, and unity of female supporters who share a common goal; (3) harness the power of women as leaders in historic and contemporary struggles for human rights, and (4) expand BCRI’s female supporters!
While BCRI’s permanent exhibitions are reflective of our history-this history would not be possible without the leadership, sacrifices, determination, and bloodshed of women. These courageous “SHEroes” joined forces with various other leaders of the movement to ensure civil and human rights were afforded to all. Their involvement provided vision and hope for future generations-worldwide.
Through the oral history project, BCRI continues to shed light on, and collect and disseminate the stories of women active, not only in the civil rights movement, but in the global human rights struggle. BCRI preserves and shares the firsthand accounts of Birmingham activists like Lola Hendricks, Lucinda Roby, and Addine “Deenie” Drew. BCRI will collect additional stories from contemporary women.
With the Circle of Light’s leadership and support, BCRI will continue its legacy of excellence with these projects. Your donation will positively impact BCRI’s ability to reach an expanded audience.
In the future women will be instrumental in everything that happens in the world. Whether they're on the front lines of rallies, peaceful protests, running for a local, state, or national office, running a corporation, owning a business, or leading a nation, a woman’s imprint will be vital. Funds generated from the Circle of Light will send a message of solidarity from its membership and assist BCRI in continuing to shine a positive light on the great civil rights work that “SHEroes” helped to create.
The Circle of Light initiative will provide funding, leadership, and new audiences for BCRI. Click here to give today!
